Aston Designs: Designing a Kitchen That Works for the Whole Family
A kitchen designed around one person's idea of a perfect kitchen is a lovely thing. A kitchen designed around the reality of family life is a different project entirely. Children, school bags, lunchboxes, the chaos of a Tuesday morning, the noise of a Sunday afternoon — these are the conditions a family kitchen actually has to work in, and the design needs to reflect that rather than pretend it away.
Homeowners across Milton Keynes who've brought this kind of brief to Aston Designs in Newport Pagnell find that it's not an unusual request at all. It's one the team are very used to thinking about, and one that produces some of the most satisfying results precisely because the constraints are real and specific.
Storage That Actually Solves the Problem
In a family kitchen, storage is never really about aesthetics. It's about where the cereal lives, where the lunchboxes go, whether the children can reach what they need without asking an adult, and whether the worktop can be cleared in under two minutes when someone drops in unexpectedly. These are functional questions, and bespoke kitchen design is at its most useful when it answers them directly.
Aston Designs work through exactly these questions during the design consultation at the showroom on St John Street, Newport Pagnell. Where do things currently end up that they shouldn't? What takes too long to find? What gets left on the worktop because there's nowhere sensible to put it? The answers shape a design that works for the specific household, not just a household in general.
Deep pan drawers instead of base cupboards make things easier to find and easier to reach. A larder unit with pull-out shelving keeps dry goods organised without requiring a rummage. Built-in recycling and waste management keeps the floor clear. These are small decisions that, accumulated, produce a kitchen that feels almost effortlessly tidy — not because it is, but because it's been designed to cope with it not being.
Durability Is Not Optional
A family kitchen takes a beating. Surfaces get scratched, doors get slammed, worktops get used as everything from a cutting board to a homework desk. The materials and fittings in a family kitchen need to be robust, and specifying the right ones requires experience.
Aston Designs work with manufacturers including Miele, Siemens, Neff, Bosch, and Leicht — brands chosen for their build quality and longevity as much as their appearance. A soft-close drawer mechanism from Leicht handles ten thousand cycles without complaint. A Miele dishwasher runs quietly and reliably for years. These are not trivial considerations when you're fitting out a room that's in near-constant use.
Installation is handled entirely by Aston Designs' own team, based at the Newport Pagnell showroom. Everything is fitted to the same standard, by the same people, with no subcontractors in the chain. The showroom is open Monday to Friday from nine to five and Saturdays from ten to four, at 14 St John Street, Newport Pagnell, MK16 8HJ.
